"The Great Gatsby" Reading Log - Chapter 1 The Introduction

In the first chapter of "The Great Gatsby" we're introduced to Nick Carraway, also the one narrating the story of the "The Great Gatsby". I like the style of Fitzgerald writing its different then way other authors do and it keeps me interested in the novel. The middle West where Nick was from described the setting to be "like the ragged edge of the universe"(9). Just near the middle of the first chapter there was a lot of tension that could be felt between Daisy and Tom Buchanan because of the mysterious phone calls from Toms secret mistress. Some of the conflicts that we're seeing already are person vs. person and person vs. self. I have a feeling were gonna see much more of this later on. There weren't any major themes that really stood out to me at the time. Near the end of the chapter we see some symbolism. As Nick arrives home for the first time he sees Gatsby for the first time, noticing him staring off into the distance and seeing a green lamp off at the other end of the lake. At the time i wasn't sure what the green light meant but I knew it had meaning to Gatsby, this also was foreshadowing something to me(1). It could mean a number of things to Gatsby, something he always found interesting, something he used to remind himself of or it could poss a deeper greater meaning to him. To me the first chapter was a great start to the book, we were formally introduced to four of the charters of the novel, and got to see a side to each of them and got a feel for their character.
